Where to stay for darshan: Tirupati city or Tirumala hill?
TTD rooms on the hill put you minutes from the queue, but they are allotted for 24 hours only and are hard to get on busy days. A hotel in the city is an hour from the temple and you can stay as long as you like. Here is how to decide.

Every first-time pilgrim asks the same question: stay on the hill at Tirumala, or in the city at Tirupati? Both work. They suit different trips. These are the facts we give guests at the desk, including the times we tell them to stay on the hill.
The two places
Tirumala is the hill town around the temple, about 3,200 feet up. Almost all accommodation there belongs to TTD: guest houses, cottages and pilgrim halls booked through the TTD portal or allotted on arrival.
Tirupati is the city at the foot of the hills with the railway station, the airport, the Central Bus Station, private hotels of every kind, restaurants, and the temples of Tiruchanur and Govindaraja Swamy. The temple is 22 to 26 km away up the ghat road.
TTD rooms on the hill: what to know
- Booking: online, through the TTD portal, with quotas released about 90 days ahead. Rooms are also allotted on arrival at the Central Reception Office, but on busy days there may be none left.
- Price: very reasonable, from about ₹100 for basic rooms to about ₹1,500 for AC rooms, with a refundable deposit process that TTD has been simplifying.
- Rules: a room is allotted for 24 hours and cannot be extended. Late vacating is charged at multiples of the rent. Rooms are not given to a single person; at least two must check in. Pilgrims report in a fixed slot, and biometric verification is taken at allotment.
- Advantage: you are minutes from the queue complex. If your darshan slot is at 4 AM, you walk there.
Choose the hill if you have a confirmed early slot, you are two or more adults, you can live within 24 hours, and you do not mind basic facilities.
Private hotels in Tirupati: what to know
- Booking: online with live availability, or by phone and WhatsApp, and you can stay two, three or more nights.
- Price: from about ₹500 for a lodge to ₹4,000 and more for full-service hotels. A clean AC room with parking in a good location is usually ₹1,500 to ₹3,000.
- Flexibility: late arrivals, singles, families needing extra beds, longer stays, luggage storage after checkout.
- Food: restaurants of every kind within walking distance in the newer parts of the city.
- Distance: the temple is an hour away. Buses run from about 3 AM, so an early slot means a 3 AM start. On the hill the same slot is a short walk.
Choose the city if your darshan is on day two, you are travelling with children or elders, you want to visit Tiruchanur, Kapila Theertham or Srikalahasti, or you want a proper night’s sleep and a shower with hot water.

A combination many families use
Stay two nights in Tirupati. Visit Tiruchanur on the first evening, collect SSD tokens or hold a Special Entry booking, take the first bus up the hill on the second morning, finish darshan by late morning, and come down to rest. On the third morning, leave for Srikalahasti or the station.
If you have a TTD room on the hill for the darshan night, you can still stay in the city the night before and after, which keeps the 24-hour rule from cutting your trip short.
Where Aakarsh Inn fits
We are on Tiruchanoor Road, ten minutes from the railway station and the Central Bus Station, and two kilometres from Tiruchanur temple. Thirty-two new rooms, free parking, a kettle in every room. The desk knows the bus timings.
