Tirupati crowd and festival calendar 2026-27: when to come, when to avoid, and what changes
Tirumala sees about 73,000 pilgrims on an ordinary day and far more during Brahmotsavam, Vaikuntha Ekadasi and school holidays. This calendar shows the busy and quiet periods, how darshan arrangements change, and what happens to hotel rates.

Tirumala is never empty. The temple recorded an average of about 73,000 pilgrims a day in 2025-26, and on peak days the number passes a hundred thousand. Crowds change waiting times, token quotas, ghat road rules and hotel rates. This calendar is what we tell guests who ask when to come.
The year at a glance
| Period | Crowd | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| January (Sankranti, Rathasaptami) | Very heavy | Holiday crowds; Rathasaptami brings a full day of processions |
| February (after Sankranti) | Light to moderate | One of the two best months; pleasant weather |
| March to early April (Ugadi) | Moderate, heavy around Ugadi | Warm; exam season keeps families away until holidays begin |
| Late April and May (summer holidays) | Very heavy | School holidays; Saturdays among the busiest of the year; hot |
| June (holidays end) | Light to moderate | The other quiet month; very hot |
| July and August | Moderate | Monsoon showers; Aug to Sep two-wheeler restrictions on the ghat road |
| September and October (Brahmotsavam) | Extreme for nine days | Rates two to three times normal; book months ahead; darshan arrangements change |
| November (Karthika masam) | Heavy on Mondays and weekends | Karthika Deepam and Tiruchanur’s Panchami Theertham draw crowds |
| December and January (Vaikuntha Ekadasi, Christmas to New Year holidays) | Extreme | Vaikuntha Dwara Darshan over ten days; SSD suspended; city full |
Weekends are busy in every month. Long weekends and public holidays behave like festival days.
What changes when it is busy
- Sarva Darshan waits stretch from a few hours to well over a day.
- SSD tokens finish early, and the counter timings move. Around Vaikuntha Ekadasi they are suspended.
- ₹300 Special Entry slots for festival dates sell out within minutes of release, sixty days ahead.
- TTD rooms fill through the quota system months ahead.
- Private hotel rates in Tirupati rise 30 to 50 per cent in the October to February season and can double or triple during Brahmotsavam and Vaikuntha Ekadasi.
- Ghat road rules tighten: two-wheelers are limited to daylight hours in the wildlife breeding season, and vehicles may be held at Alipiri when Tirumala’s parking is full.
Best dates for a calm trip
- A weekday in February, after Sankranti crowds go home. Cool mornings, short queues.
- A weekday in June, once schools reopen. Hot, but the hill is cooler than the city and the queues are short.
- Early September, before Brahmotsavam begins. Check the dates first; they move each year.
If you must come at a peak
- Book the ₹300 Special Entry the moment it releases, and book the hotel the same day.
- Travel by train or bus rather than car; Tirumala’s parking fills and vehicles wait at Alipiri.
- Plan one darshan, not three temples in a day. Tiruchanur the evening before is the realistic extra.
- Carry water and snacks. The wait will be long. Elders and small children should not attempt the open queue during festivals.
Weather, briefly
Tirupati is hot from March to June (often above 38 °C), wet from July to October, and pleasant from November to February. Tirumala is several degrees cooler and can be chilly before dawn in winter; carry a light layer for a 3 AM bus.
TTD publishes the official festival calendar and daily pilgrim statistics on tirumala.org. We update this page each quarter. The desk checks the day’s TTD notice.
Questions guests ask
What is the quietest time to visit Tirupati?
February after Sankranti, and June once the summer holidays end, are usually the lightest. Mid-week days outside festival periods are calmer than weekends all year.
When is Brahmotsavam in 2026?
The annual Salakatla Brahmotsavam falls in September or October. TTD publishes the exact dates each year; expect nine days of very heavy crowds, changed darshan arrangements and hotel rates two to three times normal.
Is Vaikuntha Ekadasi a good time to visit?
Only if the Vaikuntha Dwara Darshan is the purpose of your trip and you have booked months ahead. SSD tokens are suspended, special arrangements apply, and the city is full.
How busy are weekends?
Busy all year. Saturdays in the summer holidays have seen 90,000 to 95,000 pilgrims in a day. If you can, choose Tuesday to Thursday.
