Tiruchanur Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple: why pilgrims visit after Tirumala, and how to get there

Tradition says a Tirumala pilgrimage is complete only after darshan of Goddess Padmavathi at Tiruchanur. The temple is two kilometres from Aakarsh Inn on the same road.

Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple stands in Tiruchanur, a small town on the road that runs past our hotel. The goddess is the consort of Lord Venkateswara, and the tradition among devotees is that the Tirumala pilgrimage is complete only after her darshan. Because it is two kilometres from Aakarsh Inn, most of our guests visit it on their first evening or on the afternoon they come down from the hill.

Getting there from the hotel

  • Auto or car: about 2 km along Tiruchanoor Road, six minutes. Tell the driver “Padmavathi Ammavari temple, Tiruchanur”.
  • Bus: city buses along Tiruchanoor Road stop near the temple; ask at the stop opposite the Starbucks junction.
  • Parking: there is a TTD parking area near the temple; on festival days expect it to fill early.

What to expect

  • The temple is managed by TTD, so the arrangements will feel familiar after Tirumala: queue lines, deposit counters for phones and footwear, and prasadam counters.
  • Darshan is usually much quicker than at Tirumala. On ordinary weekdays a family can finish in well under an hour; weekends and festival days take longer.
  • Traditional dress is expected. Mobile phones and cameras are deposited outside.
  • The tank (Padma Sarovaram) in front of the temple is part of the visit; the Panchami Theertham festival, when the goddess’s utsavam concludes at the tank, draws very large crowds in the Karthika month (November or December).

Timings

The temple opens early in the morning and stays open into the evening, with sevas at set hours. TTD publishes the daily schedule and revises it during festivals. We do not print the hours here because they change too often to keep right. The TTD portal carries the current day’s timing.

Fitting it into your trip

Around the temple

Tiruchanur has its own railway halt (Tiruchanur station, code TCNR) on the Tirupati to Renigunta line, a few shops for prasadam and puja items, and simple eateries. For a proper meal, come back towards the hotel: PS4, A2B, Orion and Starbucks are all within a short walk of Aakarsh Inn.

Festival dates and timings follow the TTD calendar. The official source is tirumala.org.

Questions guests ask

How far is Tiruchanur from Tirupati?

Tiruchanur is about 5 km from Tirupati railway station and about 2 km from Aakarsh Inn on Tiruchanoor Road. It is a six-minute drive or a short auto ride.

Should I visit Tiruchanur before or after Tirumala?

The custom is to visit Padmavathi Ammavari after darshan at Tirumala, since she is the consort of Lord Venkateswara. Many families with only one full day visit Tiruchanur the evening they arrive and Tirumala the next morning, which is also fine.

What are the temple timings?

The temple opens early in the morning and closes late in the evening, with a break in the afternoon on some days and special timings during festivals. Timings are set by TTD and change; check the TTD portal or ask the front desk for the day's schedule.

Is there a dress code?

Yes. Traditional dress is expected, as at Tirumala. Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside.
