Family darshan checklist: documents, dress code, children, elders and what to carry
What every adult needs in hand, what to wear inside the temple, what you cannot take in, and how to make the day easier for children and grandparents. A one-page checklist from the front desk.

A darshan day starts before dawn and involves queues, counters and rules that are easy to trip over when you are tired. Print this or keep it on your phone. It is the list we go through with families at check-in.
Documents
- Original Aadhaar card for every adult. Needed for SSD tokens, Special Entry Darshan, and TTD accommodation. Names must match bookings exactly.
- Darshan ticket (PDF on the phone and a printout) if you booked Special Entry.
- Age proof for children under 12 travelling on a Special Entry booking.
- Hotel booking confirmation and a photo ID for check-in.
Dress
Traditional dress is expected inside the temple, and it is checked.
- Men: dhoti with an upper cloth, or pyjama-kurta, or formal trousers and a shirt.
- Women: saree, half-saree, salwar-kameez with dupatta, or churidar.
- Children: neat traditional or formal wear.
- Not allowed: shorts, three-quarters, sleeveless tops, T-shirts with slogans, caps inside the sanctum.
Pack darshan clothes in a separate bag, and change at the hotel or, if you are walking up, at the top after collecting your luggage.
What you cannot take in
Mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches, power banks, footwear, belts with metal in some queues, and any luggage. Deposit counters at the queue complex hold them free of charge against a token. Leave what you can at the hotel; reception holds luggage after checkout.
What to carry
- A small cloth bag with water, a snack, tissues, and any regular medicines in their strips.
- Cash in small notes and a UPI-ready phone for the bus, laddu counters and offerings. Phones go to the deposit counter before the queue, so pay for laddus after darshan.
- A light shawl or jacket for the pre-dawn bus; the hill is cooler than the city.
- A cap or umbrella for the walk between the bus stand and the queue complex in the sun.
With children
- Keep them within reach in the queue; it is crowded and moves in bursts.
- Feed them before you leave the hotel and carry something familiar to eat.
- Choose a Special Entry slot mid-morning rather than the open queue.
- Write your mobile number on a slip in their pocket.
With elders
- Prefer the Special Entry Darshan or a firm SSD slot over the open queue.
- Ask for a wheelchair at the enquiry counter; TTD provides them free at Tirumala and the queue complexes.
- Use the free luggage counters so nobody carries bags.
- Plan for the return: the bus down is about an hour and the afternoon is hot. A car for the whole family is worth it on a long day.
At the hotel the night before
- Set an alarm for your slot, and check the first bus time on tirumala.org the night before.
- Fill water bottles from the kettle, charge phones, and keep the deposit token pouch ready.
- Sleep early. A 3 AM start is normal here.
Rules on dress, deposits and assistance are set by TTD and can change; the official source is tirumala.org.
Questions guests ask
Is Aadhaar compulsory for darshan?
The original Aadhaar is required for every adult for SSD tokens and for Special Entry Darshan, and names must match the booking. Carry the physical card, not a photo.
What is the dress code at Tirumala?
Traditional dress. Men in dhoti or pyjama-kurta with an upper cloth, or formal trousers and shirt; women in saree, half-saree, salwar-kameez with dupatta, or churidar. Shorts, sleeveless tops and similar western casuals are not allowed inside.
Can I take my phone inside?
No. Mobile phones, cameras and electronic items are deposited at the counters before the queue. Carry the deposit token safely.
Do children need tickets?
Children under 12 do not need an SSD token and enter free on a Special Entry booking with age proof. They must be listed on the booking.
Is there help for elderly pilgrims?
TTD provides free wheelchairs and assistance at the queue complexes, and there are specific arrangements for senior citizens and differently-abled pilgrims. Ask at the enquiry counters at Tirumala.
