Day trips from Tirupati: Srikalahasti, Chandragiri, Kanipakam and Talakona, with distances
Four places pilgrims add to a Tirupati trip, with distance and time from Tiruchanoor Road, how to get there, and which ones combine well in a single day.

Most families give Tirumala the first full day and keep a second day for the places around Tirupati. These four are the ones our guests ask about, with distances measured from the hotel on Tiruchanoor Road.

Srikalahasti (38 km, north-east)
One of the Pancha Bhoota temples, where Shiva is worshipped as the Vayu (air) lingam. Devotees come for the Rahu-Ketu Sarpa Dosha pooja, which is performed through the day. The temple town sits on the Swarnamukhi river.
- By car: about an hour via Renigunta on NH 716.
- By bus: frequent APSRTC services from the Central Bus Station; about 50 minutes to an hour.
- By train: Srikalahasti has its own station on the Renigunta line; the ride is short, but check timings as services are infrequent.
- Allow half a day. Ordinary weekdays are calm; Maha Shivaratri and Karthika Mondays are very crowded.
Chandragiri fort (15 km, west)
A hill fort and two 16th-century palaces from the Vijayanagara period, with a small museum in the Raja Mahal. Two hours is enough for the palaces, the view from the walls and the tank.
- By car: 30 minutes on the Tirupati to Chittoor road.
- By bus: town buses run every few minutes from the Central Bus Station; the fort is a short walk or auto ride from Chandragiri town.
- Mornings are cooler for the climb to the upper fort. Check opening days; the museum closes on one weekday.
Kanipakam (68 km, west, beyond Chandragiri)
The Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka temple at Kanipakam near Chittoor is a major pilgrimage in its own right. The idol stands in a well, and devotees speak of it growing in size over the centuries.
- By car: about 1 h 45 min via Chandragiri and Puthalapattu. Combine it with Chandragiri fort on the way out or back.
- By bus: APSRTC services from Tirupati to Kanipakam run through the day; about two hours.
- Allow the full day if you visit both. Leave after breakfast and return by early evening.
Talakona waterfalls (55 km, west, in the Seshachalam forest)
The tallest waterfall in Andhra Pradesh, inside the Sri Venkateswara National Park, with a forest walk from the entrance to the falls and a small temple nearby. The road passes through villages and forest; there is no reliable bus to the falls themselves.
- By car: 1 h 30 min to 2 h, depending on the route; the Chittoor–Kadapa highway route is the smoother one.
- By bus: services towards Pileru or Madanapalle stop at Bakarapeta, about 20 km short; autos cover the rest but are not always available.
- Carry water and food; facilities are basic. The falls are best after the monsoon (September to December).
- Check that the forest entry is open; it closes at times for fire risk or wildlife movement.
Closer to the hotel, for a spare afternoon
- Kapila Theertham (12.5 km): the Shiva temple at the foot of the hills with a waterfall into the tank; busiest in the Karthika month.
- ISKCON Tirupati (3.8 km): the Krishna temple near Alipiri Road, calm and well kept, with a vegetarian canteen.
- Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple (3.5 km): the large Vaishnava temple in the old city near the railway station, with a museum.
- Tiruchanur (2 km): see our separate guide.
Practical notes
- A car for the day is the simplest way to do any of these with elders or children. The hotel does not arrange cars; an app cab or a local taxi stand is the usual way, and the fare is worth agreeing before you leave.
- Temples in the region follow the same dress and deposit rules as Tirumala: traditional dress, no phones inside.
- Distances and times here are approximate and measured from Tiruchanoor Road; open Google Maps for live directions.
Questions guests ask
How far is Srikalahasti from Tirupati?
About 38 km from Tiruchanoor Road, roughly an hour by car via Renigunta. APSRTC buses run frequently and take around 50 minutes to an hour.
Can I do Chandragiri and Kanipakam in one day?
Yes. Both lie on the road west from Tirupati; Chandragiri is 15 km and Kanipakam about 68 km. Leave after breakfast and you are back by evening.
Is Talakona reachable by bus?
Only partly. Buses towards Pileru drop you at Bakarapeta, and the last 20 km or so need an auto or your own vehicle. A car or taxi for the day is the practical choice.
